On Thursday 25th September 2008 viewers finally got to see the long awaited Extraordinary People with Derek Ogilvie. Now as many of you know Derek has been the focus of many people and organisations. Sceptics and even some psychics have been appalled and outraged by this man for the way he has claimed to be telepathic and have psychic abilities. He has used the most innocent of human beings, children.
Very conveniently, as you will read later, Derek became a household name in his native Scotland in 2000. Here is a breakdown of the programme, quotes from Professor Chris French and James Randi and ending with a test that shows the desperation that Derek and Channel Five had trying to retrieve anything usable left behind in the Ogilvie wreckage.
By Conbott
KEY
D: Derek Ogilvie
CF: Professor Chris French
JR: James Randi
CW: Chrissy Wilson (Chris French’s associate)
N: Narrator
Dd: Derek Ogilvie’s father
M: Mandy (Jamie’s mother one of the children being read)
S: Sam (Jamie’s father one of the children being read)
BEFORE THE JOURNEY BEGINS
The story begins with the narrator talking about Derek and we see him entering a room containing parents and their children in the hopes of getting answers to their problems.
The narrator describes Derek as the “Voice of the baby” and claims “he can transform parents lives by reading their babies minds”. There are some telling quotes too:
CF: In my opinion he's fooling himself, he's fooling lots of ther people.
JR: Psychics are knowing fakes and frauds and they take advantage of the people who pay them for their services.
Now we have Derek sat while being interviewed on some steps describing how he uses his frontal lobe. As he rubs his head to the right hand side he says I believe that’s where my frontal lobe is. This is strange coming from someone who professes to be psychic. After all he should know for sure shouldn’t he?
Now back to the narrator. Derek was born 42 years ago in the Scottish town of Paisley. He claims, like most psychics do, that he knew he was different at an early age. There’s no surprise here I know but apparently his deceased neighbour Mr Copeland triggered the psychic events. Derek standing out from the crowd has nothing to do with a gift but it’s not about truth as you will read.
Derek claims he kept his psychic secret to himself.
D: There was one rule in our house when I was growing up and it was never to lie. So I kept my abilities very very quiet in fact...I literally took them and put them in a box in my box in my brain and threw the key away. And it wasn't until obviously the mid 90's that I opened that box and obviously I became a professional psychic.
Now this statement actually conflicts with the real year that Derek became a psychic which was 2000. He knows what he’s doing though. Conveniently it wasn’t that long after he became bankrupt. This is very telling as to the real reason why he suddenly claimed to have miraculous powers. The following statement from the interview he gave on this website gives a highly possible and very fitting reason as to why Derek now claims to be telepathic and psychic.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2006/jun/19/familyandrelationships.tvandradio
Eventually he opened a music shop and by the late 90's, owned a nightclub and a couple of bars. Then, in 2000, in the space of a fortnight he went bankrupt, his relationship split up, he lost his house and his business. "My dad had to bring me food parcels. That's how bad it got."
I’m sorry but this is far far too convenient for my liking but Derek claims it was his grandmother who came to him after she had died in 2000 that inspired him to choose this career. Another commonly used excuse used by many woo merchants. The narrator calls it his “lucrative career”. The next interview with his father backs up the bankruptcy story. They had no idea that their son was psychic until, you’ve guessed it, 2000. I’m not sure whether they’re fooling themselves or trying to hide their embarrassment.
Dd: When this all staarted I said to Derek, is there a hoax here? Are you uhh...taking people on? Are you kidding is there something funny here goes on? And Derek said no. I can actually talk to people. So I've got to accept it. There's no way I'm gonna disbelieve him you know.
We keep getting examples of Derek reading a parent uh sorry a child in parts of the programme. All distasteful and nothing more than cold reading. Just before the break Derek yet again denies he’s a liar and fake.
D: I'm no liar, I'm not a fake. I don't lie, I really do this. You know watch what I do, analyze what I do and you'll see that I can really...I really do it.
Now we’re onto a couple who are at their wits end with Jamie their two year old daughter.
In true cold reading fashion Derek talks about a bruise on top of mum’s right leg or buttock and tells them how little Jamie found this funny. This part of the reading was let’s say…..suspect. Maybe hot reading, who knows.
D: ...Umm she just told me there that the last puncture you had in a car...
S: Umm umm.
D: ...was the rear passenger wheel.
S: (Pause) yes.
D:Thankyou. Is that absolutely and unbelievably 100% knock out spot on?
S: Yes.
D: Thankyou.
This is the possible hot reading I mentioned. He’s probably walked past their car, seen the sealant that’s applied after a puncture or maybe a wheel trim missing and jumped all over it. But we’ll never know for sure. Why the "absolutely and unbelievably 100% knockout" bit? He didn’t jump up and down with glee about the mother’s bruising. Anyway as usual the parents somehow see a miraculous insight into their child’s mind and Mr Ogilvie leaves happy.
Now for the onset of the tests.. We now see Derek heading off for London to begin the first test with Professor Chris French.
D: I can't determine what's going to happen tomorrow cos I'm not in control. So therefore I can't guarantee how it's gonna go. It could go brilliantly or it could be a disaster. I've no idea. I have to go in and hopefully the child's up for communicating. Cos I've not picked any of these children.I've picked none of them. I'm going into six children that I've never met in my life before. If the children are up for digging tomorrow then I will fly through it. I'm going to enjoy the journey as a journey and hopefully it will all come together and get further psychic studies in some way. I'm searching for the truth. I'm searching for the truth.
I’ll give Derek one thing he likes to pre –warn us of his impending failure.
Now for the test. It will be conducted at Goldsmith’s College in London. It is Britain’s leading academic centre for psychic and paranormal research. Here’s part of an interview with Chris French himself:
CF: But what we're about is trying to on the one hand see whether they maybe really do exist and on the other hand trying to look, well why would people think they exist if (inaudible) in fact they don't.
We keep seeing clips of Derek cold reading a mother while professing it comes from the child. Why a toddler would talk about a badly fitting bra is anyone’s guess. As usual he pays no attention to the toddler while reading the mother but someone who wants to believe wouldn’t see this. To me it’s a vital observation that when spotted can help someone to see what Derek’s doing.
TEST ONE
Before the tests begin the parents are removed from their children leaving them with a child minder. Derek is constantly monitored by CCTV cameras and Chris French and Chrissy Wilson will view him through a one way mirror. Derek is never out of sight.
Throughout the day six children of varying ages are brought to Derek via the child minder. He has to connect with the children, read their minds and write down what the children are saying telepathically to him. On day two the parents must then read the individual statements and correctly identify their child in one of them. Derek must get four out of six to pass the test.
Derek already shows concerns for the test. He’s in too deep already but can’t back down.
d: Why would you not allow the mother to be even even if I was blindfolded for instance?...
...But on the footage that you've seen of me how can I tell people what I've been able to tell them if the if there's been no collusion in un and I've not had any information at all from any third party?
These are not the words of a confident man. Chris French explains why the test can’t be done that way and talks about cold reading techniques too. Chris French is courteous and willing to answer Derek’s questions. Derek had to agree to the test criteria before it began. This helps to rule out at least some excuses for failing later on.
Derek wasn’t off to a good start. The first little boy wanted daddy but he said he could read him even if the child was in a different room. Neither Chris French or Chrissy Wilson saw anything tangible with the first two readings. However with the third child events took a turn for the worse for Derek. His vague moles and lumps statements previously didn’t validate anything. The programme flicks between Derek and Chris and Chrissy as they comment.
CF: I'm amazed at how fast he is.
CW: Yeh, yeh
D: Go back go back go back go back go back go back go back go back go back go back go back go back go back go back go back go back. This is frantic isn't it?
CF: He's come out with lots of words but he's not actually said a great deal yet.
I’d like to note here that Derek does not interact with the children in any way. His ramblings and pacings are second to none. Now he begins to read the child minder.
CF: Is he now reading for the child minder?
CW: Yeh yeh.
Again more vague aims at ear aches this time. His tone is quite sharp with the poor child minder too. But I’ve witnessed his tone change before.
CF: Although he shouldn't actually be doing this cos it's not part of of what we want it's actually very revealing cos it, this this is typical cold reading in action.
CW: Yeh.
CF: You know the way he's kind of...brow beat her into accepting things to find things that match. Change it if it doesn't fit first time. If it's not happened in the past it might happen in the future. (CW nods in agreement). This is just classic stuff.
D: That girl's reading your mind.
CF: I see so he...
CW: Oh.
CF: ...says he's doing this through the baby.
The child minder has kept her composure and is now bombarded with awkward car seat runners with a free demonstration by Derek using a chair. Again he doesn’t go near the child but thankfully she’s oblivious and basically doesn’t care.
CF: He's gonna keep going I think until he tries to turn it (inaudible)
More car seat statements, the childminder must be wondering what’s happening. All she was supposed to do was look after the children.
D: It's fine it's fine it's fine it's fine you car seat...
CF: What he's doing here...he's got the child minder inn the mother's place. Typically he does the readings with the mother present.
CW: Right, right okay.
CF: And so this is normally the routine he'd be he'd be working on a parent. But there's no parent there so he's using the child minder instead.
CW: Yeh but he's...
CF: And and you can see then how at the end of the day he's gonna say this fit, this fit, that fit the other fit...
CW: Umm.
CF: I got that hit, I got that hit. (Pause).
CW: Well at least he's just.....cold reading.
CF: Umm.
No pulling of wool over Chris’s and Chrissy’s eyes is there? At this point Chris French interrupts Derek who by now is pretty frantic. After he explains to him that they need something evidential for the parents to read Derek disgustingly blames the little girl by saying …she’s want to talk about it just now. …And she’s in control.
No matter how good or bad you are shifting the blame onto a very young child is appalling. As expected the children begin to tire as the day wears on. Derek’s behaviour is now very erratic and unpredictable. Derek is now imitating some kind of wing flapping and it's definitely time to call it a day.
D: Fine fine fine fine fine fine fine fine fine. Da da da da da da da (inaudible). Tell me tell me tell me tell me. Da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da.
Both Chris and Chrissy are speechless. Again we see Derek pacing and spouting nonsense. Derek has already admitted that he’s struggling and backs it up with what he says next.
D: (Inaudible) cos I'm aggrevated cos I've had a mother sitting there. And she'd just have said yes to me on a couple of things. Not confident enough with the, with what...
Chris French says that what Derek says here is incredibly significant. As he says Derek has unwittingly stated that he needs feedback, he needs the mother saying yes and no. "…a key part of cold reading and absolutely central".
Derek’s actions and statements have spoken volumes. Now it’s time for the verdict and Derek is far from optimistic. By chance a person is expected to get one out of six in the test and Derek did exactly that. He says to Chris French:
D: I mean I would like to do tests with you that I'm actually sitting with the mother.
He just never gives up does he? He constantly reaffirms what he is, I’m sure he doesn’t realise the damage it’s doing.
D: ...I get images and I get pictures and I get feelings and I get little movies played to me. I really do, I'm not a liar, I really really reallly do.
Derek if nothing else is persistent. Personally I would hang my head in shame and blend in with the woodwork but thankfully I’m nothing like Mr Ogilvie. Chris French now finishes:
CF: In my opinion he's fooling himself, he's fooling lots of other people. I would bet my house that he is not gonna pass the Randi challenge. And I have to say at the end of the day I kind of felt pretty damn sorry for him. He's obviously taken it very hard.
Derek is now in tears, the truth hurts especially when you fight against it because your conscience doesn’t kick in.
D: (Crying) I know I'm real (pause). I know I'm not a bull s*itter..... (Derek openly admits that Chris and Chrissy were good with him).....And that's one of the reasons I did this cos I just wanted to (inaudible) honestly I'm not a liar.
Somehow I feel like I’ve just been in Derek’s mind and escaped unscathed. One of the most apparent observations I made was his complete lack of interaction with the children. I’m sorry but there is no way that Derek connected with any child whatsoever. This troublesome fact only strengthens the belief that he is a fraud and I’m sure many others will agree.
Now for the ultimate and most feared test of all, The James Randi Million Dollar Challenge.
TEST TWO
The day after the test in London Derek flies to Florida to meet his “greatest nemesis” James Randi. He has dedicated over sixty years of his life to exposing fraudulent psychics, etc. Derek is the first professional psychic ever to take the challenge.
JR: Psychics in most cases are self deluded and they take advantage of the people who pay them for their services.
Now with this test we don’t have any running commentary like we did with Chris French but nonetheless the results are as spectacular. James Randi has tested people all over the world and has never, without exception, found any psychic ability.
JR: There is no evidence to support it.
The challenge is to be conducted at the Miami university. It houses modern sound proofed studios that will prevent Derek from cheating. To win the challenge Derek must score 60% from the test.
We now see Derek meet James Randi for the first time. James Randi explains to Derek that they are satisfied with the conditions but for it to begin Derek must also agree. He shows him the target area and Derek checks the toys and objects while there.
N: The test will involve Derek having to identify which one of ten toys or objects the child will be holding at any one time.
Derek will be seated in an adjacent sound proofed and blacked out room. The only thing he will have with him is his self proclaimed telepathic connection providing a link to the child. Derek himself has now agreed to the test conditions so they can soon proceed.
JR: What's always exciting is after the tests fail, and they invariably do...(sigh) we listen to what the uh the victim of this whole thing says. Uh they look upon themselves as victims and uh.....they immediately complain that the latitude and longitude what's wrong. It was a strange country...uh atmospheric pressure was wrong. Uh...politics whatever. There's always a reason why it didn't work.
Derek now tells us he feels intimidated and founds the situation off putting. He’s asked the team a few times to call him Derek but after a few Mr Ogilvie’s his nerves are still frayed. It’s not unfriendly but it’s a bit cold. Again the pre used excuses are there.
D: It's difficult enough communicating with a child but under these condit, I didn't realise the conditions would be as not harsh but...you know cold or stayed.
My goodness what am I putting myself through again?
Maybe it’s just me but the conditions are far from harsh or anywhere near that. Of course there’s not going to be raptures of laughter and small talk. When a million dollars is at stake there’s no room for error. Why Derek is so nervous is lost on me I’m afraid. What did he honestly think would happen? Unless of course it’s simply because he knows he can’t do it, that scenario works for me anyway. Derek talks about being given a bank statement showing proof that the million dollars is a very real prize. So for all the psychics out there who use the non existent prize money as an excuse it has now been publically broadcast that as Derek says himself "it does exist".
On to the long anticipated test. Derek has now been put in a locked, sound proofed and blacked out room. Orange balls number 1 to 10 have been placed in a black pouch. Both parents are sat with their son Macana. Each ball represents one toy or object that are picked from a box for Macana to play with.
Derek begins by asking to go to item 1. The balls are shaken in the pouch. Before the test Derek was allowed to practise with Macana who he picked out of ten possible children. That’s seems fair to me. The show flicks between Derek in the room and Macana, parents and James Randi himself who brings the toys and objects each time Derek asks for the next item.
The rules state that each object is replaced once Derek has identified it. This makes sure that Derek’s odds of identifying a toy or object stays at 1 in 10. But to identify the acquired 6 out of 10 the odds rise to a substantial 6,000 to 1.
The CCTV cameras, like the English test constantly monitor Derek to prevent any cheating. Each time Macana picks a ball from the pouch and says the relevant number that corresponds with the item brought to him. Derek is now becoming increasingly intense. He’s paced a little but soon takes his seat again and continues. After a bit of chair spinning he finally asks for the last item but struggles the longest with it. Amazingly the test only took twenty minutes.
D: That was tough, that was tough. I'll probably get none.
The way Derek sounds is just like I was at school with my exams. But it shouldn’t be this way. After all he’s not supposed to be guessing at anything and once again it’s a clear indication that his psychic powers don’t exist.
As Derek repeats how tough the challenge was James Randi carefully calculates the test results. As he waits outside in anticipation we are given the inevitable results:
JR: And as I expected, this is interesting. One of his answers, number 10 was skateboard and it was the skateboard. So 1 out of 10 is what would be expected by chance alone. So either zero or 1 or 2 would have been well within expectation. And that's what we got. But that's the story with things. We get chance expectation when the tests are properly, thoroughly, scientifically, logically, rationally done.
Now I think that this man really is in firm belief that he really can talk to the children like this. I think he thinks that he can. But at the same time he's also using gimmicks and whether he recognizes that he's using gimmicks this business of of reading the parents actually uh reading their reaction. I don't know whether he's aware of that...
I'm 78 now substract 17 from that when I started doing this sort of thing. That's the number of years that I've been looking around to see if there are any such gifted people. So far...Niett (JR uses thumbs down motion.
This is from James Randi himself, what more needs to be said. Well…actually…you’ve guessed it another unsurprising excuse.
D: I've not shown any psychic abilities today. Cos if I'd shown my true worth...then umm...I would've got a much much higher score.
Derek knows already, he’s not even hiding it but uses it as an excuse. This is certainly no way to win people over.
These tests are built for people to fail.
I think not Mr Ogilvie. Both tests were conducted correctly, fairly and professionally. It is Derek, who inadvertently keeps blurting out evidence of his fraudulent ways, that has failed. But what more can we expect from a delusional man who’s conscience doesn’t exist.
Now for the final and controversial test. Sadly this has fed an already fake and selfish man. The wreckage salvaging is upon us I’m afraid. But it needs to be written just to show how an initially interesting programme can turn into something unbelievable and not in a good way.
TEST THREE
Derek now travels to Coral Springs in Florida. According to the narrator he has now come to see "one of the USA’s foremost experts on brain behavioural activity" none other than Dr Gerald Gluck. Here’s some interesting websites on Dr Gluck. Words and actions can be very telling:
http://www.childrenofthenewearth.com/ihd/print.php?ID=508
http://www.reachoutmag.com/bizdir.html
http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/51920.html
http://www.professionalhealers.org/profile/Gerald_Gluck_115.html
Dr Gluck seems to be a very busy man. This is a list of what he does, etc, from the last link above:
Brennan Healing Science Practitioner, Energy Healer, Psychotherapist
Modalities Brennan Healing Science Practitioner, Energy Healing, Psychotherapy
Area of specialty ADHD - Attention Deficit Disorder with/without Hyperactivity
Autism/Aspergers Syndrome
Brain Injuries/Stroke
Chronic Pain
Death, Dying, Grief
Divorce/Separation/Terminations/Endings in General
Mental/Psychological Health Issues
Biofeedback
Neurofeedback
Dr Gluck has a few letters and titles after his name. He qualified from Cornell University in 1979. He is a marriage and family therapist, a PhD and Fellow BCIA EEG, LMFT P.A.
As much as Channel Five would like the viewers to believe that Dr Gluck is an unbiased scientist he isn’t. I’m going to put some comparisons here from this website: http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/pseudo.html comparing a scientist to a pseudo scientist. I thought I’d leave the readers to decide on which category Dr Gluck could possibly fall into:
SCIENCE
Their findings are expressed primarily through scientific journals that are peer-reviewed and maintain rigorous standards for honesty and accuracy.
PSEUDOSCIENCE
The literature is aimed at the general public. There is no review, no standards, no pre-publication verification, no demand for accuracy and precision.
SCIENCE
Convinces by appeal to the evidence, by arguments based upon logical and/or mathematical reasoning, by making the best case the data permit. When new evidence contradicts old ideas, they are abandoned.
PSEUDOSCIENCE
Convinces by appeal to faith and belief. Pseudoscience has a strong quasi-religious element: it tries to convert, not to convince. You are to believe in spite of the facts, not because of them. The original idea is never abandoned, whatever the evidence
I’ve only used a few examples that I think are relevant to this story but the website is very informative all round. I don’t want to presume that Dr Gluck is one or the other but his techniques and theories are questionable in proving that Derek is truly telepathic and psychic. Psychic phenomena is not a proven science and never has been. Without true hard evidence it remains unanswered and no amount of brain wave tests on their own are going to verify it.
This website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Brennan and Dr Gluck’s association with it speaks highly of what his test results will determine and his own beliefs just by association alone.
Back to the test. Dr Gluck opens with an already bias statement.
DG: There's been very little EEG research done on people who have this kind of extraordinary talent.
We now know immediately the direction the test is going or what Dr Gluck, Derek and Channel Five are hoping for. Derek meets Dr Gluck and his associate Debbie. Again Derek talks about concentrating on his frontal lobe and Dr Gluck tells him this part of the brain is used to regulate emotions. Derek’s test results will be compared to the average readings of the general public. 21 probes are attached to his scalp to receive electrical impulses deep inside his brain.
We see a clip of Derek rambling on to Debbie on how he wouldn’t take the test if he was fake and she agrees. The test is immediately invalidated as Derek now claims to be reading a child with the mother present. At last he gets his own way and yes he definitely cold reads the mother and doesn’t interact with her child once more.
Within ten minutes half a million data points have registered. It will take two weeks to analyze all of them. While doing his reading Dr Gluck and Debbie sit nearby and observe the procedure. Dr Gluck is apparently and “immediately aware” that something “extraordinary” is happening.
After two weeks Derek returns for the much needed results. He appears reserved but he knows what’s coming and there won’t be any tears shed this time. He knows he’s going to hear what he wants next. We now see pictures of Derek’s brain and the sickening prognosis follows:
DG: He is involved in a state associated with the communication of a non verbal and emotional nature as opposed to a verbal or a semantic nature.
The answer to the question at the beginning was is something happening to your brain? And the answer is yes it does. Is the, are those changes that we registered consistent with your report and the activity that you're engaged in? The answer is yes again.
D: Does that mean I'm telepathic?
DG: That's not a scientific label. It means that you're using sensory perception that is translike umm that's emotionally dominant. You're receptive and you're receiving information of some kind. And you're using the parts of your brain that we would expect you to re, to use based on what you're saying, you're saying and doing. It confirms and validates what you say.
So what Dr Gluck has said here, no matter how carefully he worded it, was yes Derek you are telepathic and I’ve just proved it. Dr Gluck is well aware of the impact his statements will have and Derek’s delusions of being psychic are now strengthened. This information will keep him even further away from facing the truth that he is conning innocent people and living a lie.
No one likes a guilty conscience (given that you have one to begin with) and we’re relieved when someone comes along and eases it for us. This is exactly what Dr Gluck has done but in this situation it was morally and professionally wrong. But this was the expected outcome.
D: This means so much to me cos it means that I'm not I'm not lying to people when when I say that it's happening.
DG: No you're not lying. Something changes in your brain.
Playing with words again.
D: (Long pause). Do you know I've waited years for someone to tell me that.
Umm…I’m sure you have now you’re a faithful fan of Dr Gluck.
DG: And it is greater than normal.
Apparently according to the narrator only 0.3% of the population can do this. But who’s to say that we all wouldn’t fall into a 0.3% somewhere in the in the research of our brains? Utter nonsense, it proves nothing apart from Derek Ogilvie’s desperate attempt at keeping up his fraudulent lifestyle. This last disturbing statement from Dr Gluck only adds fuel to the fire.
DG: ...And it's very very possible that his talent and his ability could be increased...and made more powerful, with training.
If the readers have a little time on their hands please read the science versus pseudo science website from earlier. I know how I see Dr Gluck and the website helped me to make up my mind. Sometimes a good and informative website can work wonders. What more does Dr Gluck have to say for people to realise that the outcome came as no great surprise? It’s blatant bias for Derek and the psychic field.
SUMMARY
So there we have it. Derek is now, once again, heading off on his fictional and deluded journey. Sadly the narrator tells us that Derek’s still selling out theatres, etc and that he’s as popular as ever. And what a surprise he’s going to work with Dr Gluck in the future.
I’m sure Derek’s disclaimer at his sell out theatre shows won’t be saying “For Entertainment Purposes Only” and if it does it will be squeezed in the corner where a convenient cover will fall over it. No instead Dr Gluck’s name and the test will be splashed all over it maybe in lights who knows.
Derek now feels confident to take the James Randi Challenge again. Umm…..I wonder which TV channel will film him this time? For Five will it be a case of once bitten twice shy? After all the crater that was dug with Derek’s failures may just have had a ladder long enough to help them crawl out but Round 2…..I don’t think so.
The first two tests were conducted in a scientific and professional way. There was no trickery or unfair demands placed on Derek anywhere. One thing I found reasonably surprising was the complete lack of interaction with the children in all three tests. Don’t forget the children play a key role in his self professed psychic abilities, according to him. Derek couldn’t possibly read their minds while pacing up and down, repeating da.da.da numerous times and openly admitting that he was struggling. Even someone who isn’t sceptical could see that Derek was out of his depth completely.
The last test with Dr Gluck was Channel Five’s and Derek’s last ditched attempt at saving some integrity following the aftermath with Chris French and James Randi. Dr Gluck was thrown into the mix to try and add something seemingly incredible. How can someone who is pro woo give a balanced and fair test? This tactic failed but sadly some viewers wouldn’t see it this way. Of course we all know that Chris French and James Randi are sceptics but with good reason. 61 years dedicated to finding true psychic ability is not to be taken lightly. The scientific side must play a major role in order for the test to be as accurate as possible. As I said earlier there was no great demands placed on Derek and the reception he got was far from hostile.
According to Derek's website:
http://www.derekogilvie.com/#
he has already returned for more brain tests in January of this year. This is under the NEWS section and goes as follows:
D: When I was in the US last year I did some brain tests in Miami and went back to Miami in January to do some more. I can't say much at this point but I'm sure that many in the world of science, the people who really matter in the study of psychic phenomenon, will be interested in having a close look at the results when they are published on the website very shortly.
Well I'm far from being a scientist but I will also be interested in what these miraculous tests have to say. From Derek’s convenient psychic revelations after being made bankrupt to Dr Gluck it strengthens my own personal beliefs that Derek Ogilvie is nothing more than a fraud and a potentially dangerous one at that. I’m sorry but right from the beginning with the bankruptcy and his parents left in the dark till 2000 it’s way too convenient to be anything else for my liking. No I can’t say for sure but my suspicions are there all the same. For a Doctor who claims to be scientific his statements have fuelled Derek’s desperate attempt at believing he can do it. Yes he is delusional but there’s no doubt in my mind that he knows how to play the psychic game. Many times throughout the programme Derek showed his true side and I completely believe that he knows it’s all about deception. I’ve seen several of his readings and charades before this programme aired and one selfish and thoughtless statement can scar a person for life. Telling a woman in one of the readings that she has a son in spirit when in fact she’s never had a son says it all. Now Derek is well established back in his fantasy world the risk of him hurting others with his lies is sadly all too real. But unless Derek was calling someone’s bluff you never know he may be visiting James Randi again. As to whether a TV channel will bother wasting their money and time is anyone’s guess.
Youtube
Someone has put the whole show on Youtube, I do not know how long it will last so watch it while you can.
