Episode #4: "Mad Ray"
Official site link: http://www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/celebrity_paranormal/110143/episode_about.jhtml

The fourth episode of "Celebrity Paranormal Project" returned to the Warson Hospital for the Criminally Insane with a new team and a new assignment: to look for the ghost of "Mad Ray", a patient in the 1970s who had killed a guard in an escape attempt; then had hanged himself in the attic to avoid a scheduled lobotomy.

The team for this episode consisted of:

Traci Lords, actress, easliy frightened of things
Gilbert Gottfried, comedian and character voice actor, says he's afraid of everything
Evan Farmer, host of the home design series "While You Were Out", a skeptic with an open mind
Kimberly Caldwell, a host of "American Idol", this week's "conduit" to the "spirits."
Jeremiah Trotter, a linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles football team, nice guy

I got the impression that these folks were a friendly batch, and had less personality issues than some of the other teams we've seen to date. They started the episode with light-hearted banter, warning Jeremiah that the black guy in horror films usually gets attacked first so they'd follow him; the good-natured linebacker laughed.

The first assignment sent Gilbert and Kim to Storage Room B, believed to a be a place where Mad Ray had hidden for several days following his escape. The paranoid schizophrenic had made his bed on a mattress and pile of clothing, much of which still remained scattered over the floor. The team had a infrared camera and were told to look for red to show hot spots. Not much happened in this location.

The second assignment sent Jeremiah and an extremely reluctant Traci to the Tunnels where patients were pushed in wheelchairs by orderlies, being taken to treatment rooms and surgical areas. Traci was instructed to sit in the wheelchair and allow Jeremiah to push her through the tunnels in a re-enactment of this routine. Traci protested but finally obeyed. Jeremiah took Traci to the doors of the treatment rooms, then was instructed to leave her and return to the other end of the corridor. Traci became very scared on her own, and finally got up and ran back to Jeremiah, ending the assignment.

The third assignment sent Evan and Kim to the Recreation Room, where Ray's ghost has been observed near the chalkboard, as well as smashed furniture and chalk prints. Kim was to try an experiment in "spirit writing" by writing "Are you still here?" on the chalkborad. Evan was told to go wait down by the foot of the stairs, by the entrance to the tunnels. Kim was making marks on the board with a piece of chalk, then heard bangs and began screaming. Evan ran up the stairs and hurried into the room. Kim said she heard a "screechy whisper" say (maybe) Evan's name, and admited it freaked her out. They returned to the command base.

The final assignment sent Jeremiah and Traci to the Attic, where Ray had died by hanging himself. Observers had reported feeling cold spots and hearing the creaking of the body. Traci was told to enter the attic, while Jeremiah remained outside. She was startled to find a mannequin hanging above a stool. She was told to remove a bell from the sack she carried and attach it on a stand. The bell was supposed to be a "ghost catcher" which would chime if a spirit was present. Traci was also told to use a thermometer to check for drops in temperature. Her final instructions were to count "3,2,1", then kick away the stool under the mannequin. She did so, but as the mannequin began swinging, she screamed and ran out of the room, back to Jeremiah.

The "Heart of the Haunting" was determined to be the Rec Room, and Kim was soon picked as "the team member with the closest connection to the spirits." Despite some initial reluctance on Gilbert's part to go along, the whole team returned to this location for the "channeling session." Kim began the ceremony with the words "Enter me now through this taoken from your past" while the others placed their left hands on the handprints on the scoll. In response to the question "Are you angry or in pain?" noises were heard over the walkie talkies, and the team quickly ended the session.

Gilbert said that he did not see a ghost, but that must prove they exist, as ghosts are supposedly invisible, right? I do not believe he was being serious about anything except not seeing a ghost! I didn't observe anything that couldn't be explained by "normal" means, and using props like a hanged dummy border on bad taste.

BadPsychics was inspired by the following book, and owes a great deal to the author Phil Plait.
If there is just one book you should buy in your life then it should be Bad Astronomy.
